Ian Poulter describes his love of match play golf :

“It’s the purest form of golf, I love it. You can look your opponent squarely in the eye.”

ODGL has two leagues an ‘A’ league for players whose handicap is below 12 and a ‘B’ league for players whose handicap is between 18 and 10.

The clubs are split into two divisions for the ‘A’ teams there is a Premier League and a Championship with the champions coming from the premier and three clubs being promoted and relegated each season.

For the ‘B’ teams there is an East and West Division, the top two teams in each division go into the play offs to determine the champions.

Each team has eight players, four pairs and matches are played in a four Ball Better Ball Match play format, played over 18 holes winners pick up two points for the team while a half is one point. The teams in each division play each other both home and away.

There is also a Knock out cup completion for both the A & B teams, ties being played on a neutral venue and each team has five pairs for the cup games.

Matches are scheduled for mid-week evenings, each club has a set night for their home fixtures on either a Wednesday or Thursday, North play home games on a Thursday but some of our away fixture can be Wednesday’s. We tee off between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

The Ground Rules – there are few. This league runs itself on the fair-minded values of all. The Oldham and District Golf League is for fun and good company. Winning does matter - but not at any price!

Part of the aim of the league is to get player into the club house, so after the games there is a meal, nothing formal but a chance to sit down, have a drink with your playing partners and a break bread.

Playing for the team gives you a great chance to test yourself against players from different clubs and an opportunity to play some of the local courses. The only cost is for the meal, which for the last couple of seasons has been £7 per head per game.
